Rabies Vaccination

Rabies is a dangerous disease that, from the moment the first symptoms appear, in 100% of cases leads to death. It is impossible to cure a dog with manifest clinical symptoms of rabies. However, through timely vaccination, infection can be prevented.

Vaccination of a dog against rabies is a mandatory measure for every owner who appreciates the life and health of both his pet and everyone in his environment. And, of course, your life and health in particular.

Rabies is a disease caused by the Rabies virus and transmitted by saliva when bitten by an infected animal. The incubation period of the disease is always different and ranges from several days to a year. The virus spreads through the nerves to the brain and, upon reaching it, causes irreversible changes. Rabies is dangerous for all warm-blooded.

Despite the incurable nature of rabies and a real threat to both animals and humans, many pet owners today neglect vaccination. The classic excuse is: “Why would my pet dog (or cat) get rabies?” This will definitely not happen to us! ”Unfortunately, statistics show the opposite: in 2015, 6 Moscow clinics declared quarantine in connection with the outbreak of the disease, and from 2008 to 2011, 57 people died from rabies – and in almost all cases The sources of infection were already sick domestic dogs and cats!

And if, thanks to the colossal discovery of Louis Pasteur, who developed the first rabies vaccine in 1880, infection can be prevented today, then the disease can no longer be cured after symptoms appear. This means that all infected animals with symptoms will inevitably die. Unfortunately, the same fate applies to people. Therefore, after a bite of an animal (both wild and domestic), it is necessary to conduct an injection course as soon as possible in order to destroy the disease in the embryonic state before the first signs appear.

If you or your dog is bitten by another pet that has already been vaccinated against rabies, there is no danger of infection. When bitten by a wild or stray animal, it is necessary to contact the clinic as soon as possible and, if possible, deliver this animal with itself for quarantine (for 2 weeks). In case of symptoms, the animal is euthanized, and the bitten will receive a full course of injections. If the animal is healthy, the injection course will be interrupted. If it is not possible to deliver the animal to the clinic, the victim is given a full course of injections.

But how do domestic dogs and cats not in contact with wild animals – natural reservoirs of infection – become infected with rabies? Very simple. For example, while walking in a park, a rabbit-infected hedgehog bites your dog and passes the virus to it. Or an infected fox that leaves the forest into the city attacks a stray dog, which in turn passes the virus to a purebred Labrador walking peacefully on a leash. Another natural reservoir of rabies is mice, which in large numbers live in the city and in contact with other animals. In a word, there can be plenty of examples, but facts are facts, and rabies today is a real threat to both pets and their owners.

Rabies Dog Protection
The situation is complicated by the fact that it is not always possible to determine whether animals are sick by external signs. The presence of the virus in the saliva of the animal is possible 10 days before the onset of the first signs of the disease. Those. for some time, an already infected animal can behave quite normally, but already pose a threat to everyone around it.

As for the symptoms of the disease, the infected animal has a sharp change in behavior. For example, wild animals cease to be afraid of people, go out into cities and become affectionate, just like pets. A good domestic dog, on the contrary, can sharply become aggressive and not let anyone in. In addition, coordination of movements is disrupted in the infected animal, the temperature rises, salivation increases (more precisely, the animal simply cannot swallow saliva), hallucinations, water and photophobia develop, and convulsions begin. At the last stage of the disease, paralysis of the whole body occurs, which leads to suffocation.

Vaccination is the only way to protect against rabies!
The only way to protect your pet (and everyone else) from a terrible disease is vaccination. The weakened or killed virus of the disease (antigen) is introduced to the animal, which provokes the production of antibodies to destroy it and, as a result, further immunity to this virus. Thus, when the pathogen re-enters the body, the immune system meets it with ready-made antibodies and immediately destroys the virus, preventing it from multiplying. However, antibodies circulate in the blood for about a year, so you need to revaccinate annually.
